Adam has just submitted a doctoral thesis on the late author John McGahern, the literary tradition, and masculinity, at Queen’s University, Belfast. He argues that McGahern drew upon his knowledge of the literary tradition to reorder his personal experiences into compelling narratives with universal power. For instance, there is evidence that he incorporated elements from texts by American authors such as Ernest Hemingway and Herman Melville into his short stories and novels. The incorporation of these elements from American texts particularly informs how McGahern represents Irish male characters on psychological, behavioural, and socio-political levels.
Adam has delivered presentations from the Innovation Academy, one of which was delivered this March at the RDS at a forum for Sustainable Cities, organised by the United Nations Development Programme (duration 14:35)
What does Adam like about Research?
What I like about research is the opportunity for meaningful connections between international colleagues in different fields and universities. The Innovation Academy facilitates us to work in teams and to apply research knowledge to a wide variety of problems. At its best, it feels like we have the power to give presentations on ted.com, which can’t be a bad thing to aspire to, however off the mark we may be in reality!
I am also an actor, editor, and educator. I am interning in business development for a social enterprise in Dublin and am currently seeking career opportunities. I enjoy couchsurfing as well as philosophising about soccer!
